St. Marys

JOSEPH E. CATTARIN, 98, died at 9 a.m. July 22, 2005, at Valley Nursing Home, St. Marys.

He was born July 28, 1906, in Lovadina, Italy, near Venice, to Louis F. and Regina Caporin Cattarin, who preceded him in death. On June 23, 1934, he married Sarabel A. Baugh, who died June 5, 1987.

Mr. Cattain grew up in Alliance. He graduated from Alliance High School, where he was active in sports, playing baseball, football, basketball and golf. He graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance. In 1934, after teaching one year at Alliance High School, he joined Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron. He transferred to St. Marys in 1945, retiring in July 1971 as general foreman in the Pliofilm department.

He formed and directed the Goodyear Mens Chorus for many years. He was a member of Wayne Street United Methodist Church since 1945, where he directed the chancel choir for 24 years. He served on many church committees and as president of the Homemakers Sunday School class since 1950. He was a charter member, past president and song leader of the St. Marys Kiwanis Club since its formation in 1956. He received many Kiwanis honors, including the Legion of Honor Award and had perfect attendance for 50 years. He was a member and past president of the St. Marys Music Club since 1945. He was active as a soloist and choir director. He directed the former St. Marys Choral Society and community singing during the St. Marys Sesquicentennial Celebration. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Community Improvement Corp., Auglaize County Historical Society, Friends of the Library Association, member and past president of the Senior Citizens Club since 1972 and the Auglaize County Council on Aging since it started in 1975. He served on the Council on Aging board for many years, including the last two as president. He received the Auglaize County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in 1981 and 1987. In 1993, he was inducted into the Ohio State Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. I
