CHARLES SIMPSON Sr., 75, died at 5 a.m. Jan. 2, 2005, at Springview Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Columbus, Ga., to Sammie Lee and Bertha Clark Simpson, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 14, 1948, he married Katie Mae Shurelds, who survives in Lima.

Mr. Simpson retired from Randall Bearing, after more than 35 years, then worked as a corrections officer at Lima Correctional Institution for more than 10 years. He was a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board. He was a member of AFSCME Local 11 and the United Auto Workers Union.

Survivors include two sons, Phillip (Joselyn) Simpson and Tony Simpson, both of Lima; two daughters, Bernadine Crisp of Lima and Stacey (Sergio) Leon of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Ector (Alma) Simpson of Fayetteville, N.C., and J.W. (Ella Mae) Simpson and Samuel (Sue) Simpson, both of Lima; and five sisters, Sarah Shine, Josephine Brown, Ella Mae Watson, Bertha (Joe) Upshaw and Willa Simpson, all of Lima.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Jr. and Gregory L. Simpson; a sister, Willie Lee Simpson; and a brother, Leroy Simpson.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. H. Frank Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jones-Clark Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
