Orville Merritt Engle

Orville Merritt Engle, 83, died at 11:36 a.m. Nov. 25, 2007, at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born July 4, 1924, in Lima to Jesse and Hattie Dupler Engle, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 8, 1942, he married Catherine L. "Midge" Nolan, who died Nov. 4, 1987.

Mr. Engle was a lifelong farmer in Union Township and had retired as a finish carpenter from Kitchen's Inc., Van Wert. He attended Lima Central High School and was later awarded his diploma as an honor for his service as a veteran. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers in Europe and the South Pacific.

Survivors include three sons, Michael (Jane) Engle, of Wapakoneta, Danny (Jenis) Engle, of Cridersville, and Patrick (Betty) Engle, of Mendon; a son-in-law, Jack Roetgerman, of Minster; and 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kristina Roetgerman, who died June 29, 2007; and three brothers, Walter, Oren and Brice Engle.

Services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Mendon. Pastor Dan Holbrook will officiate. Burial will be in Tomlinson Cemetery, near Mendon, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.
