LIMA — The tradition of once-a-year kosher corned beef began 30 years ago with an annual bazaar held by the Temple Beth Israel-Shaare Zedek Sisterhood. The bazaar has not survived, but the sandwiches have. The Temple Sisterhood will once again hold its Super Bowl Sunday fundraiser with carry-out kosher corned-beef sandwich meals. At the heart of the operation is Anne Handley, chairwoman of the fundraiser and president of the temple.“You can’t get kosher corned beef in Lima,” Handley said. “To me there’s nothing better. It’s just the way it’s made. The corned beef is from Cincinnati and the rye bread is from Cleveland.”Last year about 10 women in the temple’s kitchen sent 465 meals out the door in a single day. This year, the group is hoping to add to its orders with a second day. With prepaid orders of at least eight, businesses can have the lunches delivered on that Monday, Feb. 4.Handley is beginning her third year as president. She moved to Lima when her husband took a job as a professor at OSU-Lima. That was more than 35 years ago. Handley laughs now about cultural differences that came with a move from New York. Some people stared at her, as if they had never seen a Jewish person before. It’s because of that curiosity the temple has always tried to be open to the community, Handley said.“We want people to understand who we are, what we are, what we stand for,” she said. “I love [having groups in.] We want people to know the truth about our heritage and religion. I love to answer questions.”Handley has spent most of her adult life as a member of the temple at the corner of Lakewood and Glenwood avenues. It’s like a family there. It’s a simple building, inside and out, not ornate like many other temples. What stands out is the congregation.“We’re a family,” Handley said. “Everybody knows each other.”The Super Bowl fundraiser supports the temple and other community organizations the Temple Sisterhood donates to, including the Salvation Army and Samaritan House.Temple Sisterhood Super Bowl Sunday Corned Beef Lunch Carryout is Feb. 3. Lunches are $7 and must be ordered and prepaid by Jan. 28 for pickup Feb. 3. The group is also doing deliveries to businesses Feb. 4 with prepaid orders by Jan. 28.Make checks payable to Ann Handley, 3620 S. Amblewood Circle, Lima, OH 45806.
