James L. Hicks, 71, died at 10:40 a.m. Aug. 18, 2007, at his residence in Lima.
He was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Hamilton County to Robert J. and Mary Green Hicks, who preceded him in death. On June 19, 1971, he married Mary M. Baker, who survives in Lima.
Mr. Hicks was a shipping clerk with Modine Manufacturing in Pemberville for 28 years from which he retired in 1997. He was a member of the Lima Community Church of the Nazarene. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and American Legion Post 96. He was best known for his love of cooking and country western music.
Survivors also include a son, Michael (Mary) Hicks, of Tennessee; two daughters, Denise M. (Mark) Van Dyne, of Lima, and Judy L. (Kim) Kreiner, of Michigan; a brother, Philip Hicks, of Dayton, Ky.; six grandchildren, Mark (Sarah) Hicks, Jeremy Goedicke, Crystal (Eric) Schultz, Danielle Van Dyne, Lauren Van Dyne and Gina (Shane) Jurovcik; two stepgrandchildren, Robert Ferguson and Christie (Robbie) Baety; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Jurovcik, Michael Gregory, Alex Hicks and Alyse Hicks; a very special daughter-in-law, Laverna Wagner; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Lewis Eastside Chapel, Lima. The Rev. Robert Ferrell will officiate. Burial will be later in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1275 at the burial.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
