Kathleen M. Brickner

Kathleen M. Brickner, 58, died at 8:15 a.m. April 1, 2008, at her residence.

She was born April 9, 1949, in Lima to Raymond and Ruth Powers Studer, who preceded her in death. On March 16, 1974, in Lima, she married James C. Brickner, who survives in Van Wert.

Mrs. Brickner taught seventh- and eighth-grade language arts at Lincoln Junior High School for 20 years, served as the director of curriculum for Van Wert City Schools for 10 years, and for six yeas was co-director or the West Central Ohio Regional Professional Development Center, which provides teacher professional development through the Ohio Department of Education in an eight-county area. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert, where she served on several committees, had been chairwoman of the liturgical committee and served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for professional educators and a member and past senior regent of Woman of the Moose Chapter 7, Van Wert, and its College of Regents. She was also a member and past president of the Van Wert Chapter of the American Association of University Women.

She attended St. Gerard Elementary, was a graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School and Mary Manse College, Toledo, and received her master's degree in reading from Bowling Green State University. She was a voracious and avid reader of books and a was a member of the Good Times Book Club. She attended her children's Van Wert High School soccer matches and baseball games. She also attended and helped with timing at their YMCA and high school swim meets. She did the leadership training for adult volunteers for the Hawthorne District of the Boy Scouts of America. For several years, she enjoyed playing the flute with the Van Wert Community Concert Band.

Survivors also include two sons, Carl Raymond (Megan) Brickner, of Vandalia, and Michael Edward (Kathryn) Brickner, of Willowick; a granddaughter, Aubrey Jane Brickner, of Vandalia; four brothers, Bill (Chris) Studer, of Cincinnati, James (Judy) Studer, of Stamford, Conn., John (Sandy) Studer, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Park (Lois) Studer, both of Las Vegas.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Marie Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert. Fathers Mike Zacharias and Keith Stripe will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Van Wert Community Concert Band, St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert Community Health Professionals Hospice or the Black Swamp Area Council Boy Scouts of America.
