WILBUR A. STEMEN, 84, died at 7:45 p.m. June 19, 2006, at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, Spencerville.

He was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Van Wert to Isaac and Maggie Pierce Stemen, who preceded him in death. On May 3, 1941, he married Erma Ruth Young, who survives.

Mr. Stemen retired in 1980 as a machinist from Clark Equipment Co., Lima. He was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church. He had served on the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department and as clerk for the village of Cairo. He was a member of the Cairo Community Club and the Knights of the Golden Eagle, both in Cairo, and American Legion Post 516 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9648, both in Columbus Grove. He had been a Boy Scout leader of Troop 81, Cairo. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and playing cards. He especially enjoyed visiting friends and family. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors also include a son, Terry A. (Janet) Stemen of Sneads Ferry, N.C.; two sisters, Leota Barcus of Indiana and Evelyn Hoverman of Van Wert; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gaylord Stemen; and a sister, Mary Fiock.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. The Rev. Rich Rakay will officiate. Burial will be in Cairo East Side Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 516 and VFW Post 9648.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
