Robert D. Shappell, 84, died at 8:20 a.m. Sept. 3, 2009, at Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home, Wapakoneta.

He was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Auglaize County to Eldon and Daisy Zerkel Shappell, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 1, 1952, he married Betty A. Wellington, who survives.

Mr. Shappell retired in 1980 as a mechanic from the Ohio Department of Transportation after 30 years. He was a 1943 graduate of Blume High School, Wapakoneta. He was involved with the Boy Scouts and had been a Webelos leader. He was a member of the Shawnee Long Rifles and enjoyed hunting. He was an avid auto racing fan and liked woodworking.

Survivors also include two sons, Michael (Kathy) Shappell, of Kalispell, Mont., and Andrew Shappell, of Lima; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn (James P.) Metz, of Wapakoneta; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marjorie Place, of Buckland.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Shappell; seven siblings, Eunice, Dardio and Adrian Shappell, Evadna Thuman, Helen Frazier, John Shappell and infants Dorothy and Edna Shappell.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta. Pastor Steve Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Buckland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the activities fund at Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home.
