Norman P. Opperman, 92, died Sept. 28, 2007, at his daughter's home.

He was born July 8, 1915, in New Knoxville to Henry and Deena Kuck Opperman, who preceded him death. On Sept. 12, 1937, he marred Elsie Sullivan, who survives.

He was a graduate of New Knoxville High School and The Ohio State University. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after 33 years, where he received the Goodyear Spirit Award in 1974. He was a member of the St. Marys Jaycees where he received an award for his service to humanity. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in St. Marys and was a delegate to the general conference of the church. He was a former city councilman in St. Marys and also served as mayor. He was the first mayor elected to a four-year term in the town's history. He was a staunch member of the Republican Party, and an avid fan of St. Marys Roughriders and Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a life member of St. Marys Community Library. He was affectionately known as "Grandpa Dad." His greatest joy was his family.

Survivors also include a son, Bruce (Bonnie) Opperman, of Elida; two daughters, Rebecca Ballenger, of St. Marys, and Joyce (Peter) Perri, of Jupiter, Fla.; a brother, Willis Opperman, of Toledo; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeff) Johnides, of Celina, Jason Ballenger, of St. Marys, Amy Nixon, of Upper Arlington, Peter (Cari) Perri III, of Jupiter, Fla., Paul Perri, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Amanda Opperman, of Elida; four great-grandchildren, Ali Johnides, Brianne Ballenger, Kasie Ballenger, and Peter Perri IV.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Della Hoelscher.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. The Rev. Mary Kay Brown and the Rev. Jim Nuhfer will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
