Youngstown State senior women’s basketball player Heidi Schlegel has been named the Horizon League’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January, the conference office announced Thursday.
The Wapakoneta graduate has earned the honor for the second straight month and for the fourth time in her career.
Schlegel averaged 18.3 points and 9.9 rebounds while shooting 49.5 percent from the field for the Penguins during January. She was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on Jan. 19 after a 25-point, 18-rebound performance versus Cleveland State. She also had 20-point efforts against Oakland and Milwaukee and double-doubles versus Wright State and Detroit.
After her first semester in graduate school as an interdisciplinary communications major, Schlegel earned a 4.0 GPA. The fifth-year senior graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.73 GPA in the spring of 2014 as a middle childhood education major. She was also announced as one of 30 Division I women’s basketball players in the country to be named a Senior CLASS Award candidate. Schlegel earned academic All-Horizon League honors and was tabbed League Scholar-Athlete of the Month twice in the 2013-14 academic year. Schlegel has been a member of the Dean’s list at Youngstown State and Horizon League Honor Roll each semester she’s been eligible.
Also on Thursday, Schlegel had the highest scoring game in the Horizon League this season as Youngstown State scored the final 11 points to rally for a 79-73 win at Milwaukee. Schlegel’s 38 points tied for the eighth-most in a game in school history.
