LIMA — Lima City Council will receive a petition to vacate an alley on South West Street to allow for side yard expansion during its regular meeting at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
Rose M. Ruble of 640 S. West St. initiated the petition to vacate a portion of alley between her residence and 634 S. West St., with her daughter owning the adjoining property. In a March 16 letter to the council, Ruble indicated that the alley was bringing unwanted foot traffic.
“At the present time the alley is mainly used for access for both properties or for foot traffic, which has caused damage and thefts to be done at the property located immediately south of the alley,” the letter reads. “There have been numerous break-ins and damage caused by people throwing rocks and debris at the house. People will walk through the alley and get as close to the house as possible and can see in the windows when open.”
The Lima Fire Department chief, the Lima Police Department chief and the city engineer have voiced no objections to this alley vacation. The city’s utilities department and Dominion East Ohio do not believe this vacation would affect any utilities. The City Planning Commission met on April 22 to go over the request. In its report, the commission stated that, according to Ruble, “closing the alley will not affect their neighbors since the abutting properties are owned by the petitioner and her daughter and all other parcels are accessed through West Street, as well as via an adjacent Town alley behind their properties that runs north-south.”
The commission voted unanimously to recommend the vacation to City Council for approval.
