John D. Bassitt

John D. Bassitt, 86, died at 12:22 a.m. May 17, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born March 27, 1924, in Lima to Oak Donald and Susan Doris Barr Bassitt, who preceded him in death. On May 4, 1968, he married Bessie Yvonne Haney, who survives in Lafayette.

Mr. Bassitt retired from Dingledine Construction and had worked at National Lime & Stone Quarry for 20 years. Following his retirement, he worked at Hawthorne Hills Golf Course, Lima, for 17 years. He was a member of Union Chapel Missionary Church, Lima. He enjoyed hunting, mechanical work and reading. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything else.

Survivors also include two sons, Robert (Tamra) Bassitt, of Lima, and Scott (Polly) Bassitt, of Utica; a daughter, Debra (Bob) Howard, of Waynesfield; five grandchildren, Samantha, Taylor, Hayley, Bryce and Kendra; two brothers, Sam (Barb) Bassitt and Max (Marlett) Bassitt, both of Lima; and a sister, Corrine Brown, of Lafayette.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Royce, Bob and Ralph Bassitt; and three sisters, Geneva Bassitt, Dorothy Docter and Alice Johns.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Chapel Missionary Church, Lima. Pastor Mark Bayliff will officiate. Burial will be in Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, or Union Chapel Missionary Church.
