KANSAS CITY — The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the All-America awards for the 2014-15 Division II basketball season, and for the first time ever, the University of Northwestern Ohio has a men’s basketball player honored on one of the three All-America teams.
Lawrence Jackson was named to the NAIA All-America Second Team, one of 30 athletes to be recognized as NAIA All-Americans in Division II men’s basketball. Jackson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was the Racers’ leading scorer in 2014-15, averaging 17.3 points and leading rebounder with just over five boards per contest.

DEFIANCE — Seniors Dan Belliveau and Jack LaMarca each hit home runs to lead Ohio Northern on Wednesday afternoon at Rutter Field.
The Polar Bears (10-1) have won nine straight. The Yellow Jackets fell to 5-3.
Belliveau drilled a 3-run home run, his third home run of he season, and LaMarca hit a 2-run shot, his second dinger of the year. Belliveau finished 3-for-4 with six RBI and LaMarca was 3-for-6 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI.
Freshman Dan McMullen went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
UNOH gets split
LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio (3-3) split a doubleheader against the University of Cumberlands (9-3) on Wednesday at UHOH.
The Racers dropped the first game 12-4 and then bounced back for a 7-4 triumph.
Maranda Stansbery had two hits and an RBI in each game for the Racers, and Erica Gulik allowed four runs in seven innings work to get the game 2 victory.
BLUFFTON — Bluffton (7-7) dropped 7-4 and 14-4 games to Trine (14-1), ranked No. 7 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. Ariana Muffo had three hits for the Beavers.
Swimming & diving
SHENANDOAH, Tex. — Ohio Northern sophomore Jill Chapman and junior Lindsey Inkrott kicked off their Division III NCAA Championships competition Wednesday in the 50 freestyle at the Conroe Natatorium.
Chapman finished 35th out of 46 swimmers in :23.99, while Inkrott was 46th in :25.24.
The top eight finishers in the prelims of each event earn All-America honors and advance to the final in the evening session each day, while finishers 9-16 advance to the consolation final and earn honorable mention All-America honors.
Several Ohio Northern athletes have received Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference in voting done by the league’s academic advisors.
Honored in swimming were senior Jason Luthman, senior Chris W. Hoffman, sophomore Eric Chen, senior John Willamowski, sophomore Molly Wheeler, senior Ashley Zoeller, sophomore Jill Chapman, sophomore Kelsey Brebberman, sophomore Jennifer Collopy, junior Allison Lohnes, and sophomore Stacie Melody.
Basketball honorees included sophomore and Van Wert grad Joey Hurless, junior Brooke Espenschied, sophomore Angela Tesny, senior Mary Miller, junior Carly Thomas and senior Jordan Kimes.
Senior Cody Lovejoy and junior Colt Lovejoy, both Allen East grads, and sophomore Dillon Brancheau received the honor in wrestling.
Track & field
The Bluffton women’s team was picked to finish six this year in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in a poll of the league head coaches. Franklin was selected as the favorite to win the HCAC championship.
Barons open house
LIMA — Area athletes interested in playing collegiate sports while attending The Ohio State University at Lima or Rhodes State College beginning in in the fall are invited to a Barons Athletic Open House from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 29 in the Science Building on campus.
Coaches will be on hand from men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s baseball and women’s volleyball. Prospective student athletes will have an opportunity to meet with coaching staff, admissions and financial aid counselors, and take a tour of campus.
