Ella Mae Thomas

Ella Mae Thomas, 101, died at 4:12 p.m. March 30, 2010, at Colonial Nursing Home, Rockford.

She was born April 4, 1908, in Adams County, Ind., to John Asa Logan and Martha Luella Raver Book. In 1926, she married Waldo Thomas, who died in 1998.

Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker. She was a member of Mendon United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Mendon Garden Club and had been the oldest living member of WCTU. She was known for her expertise in pie making. She wrote a book of poetry, which the proceeds went to her church to purchase a piano.

Survivors include three sons, James (Jean) Thomas, of Convoy, Carl (Mary) Thomas, of Columbus, and Wayne (Connie) Thomas, of Bowling Green; four daughters, Lois (Gene) Joseph, of Lima, Joan (Fred) Hasis, of Mendon, Betty Simpson, of Rockford, and Eunice (Glen) Richardson, of Lima; two sisters, Helen Hurless and Pauline Sell, both of Rockford; a son-in-law, Don Hellwarth, of Marysville; and 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Hellwarth; three brothers, John, Russell and Rea Book; a sister, Olive Leighner; three infant siblings; a grandson, Greg Joseph; a daughter-in-law, Mary Thomas; and a son-in-law, Maurice Simpson.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mendon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Donald Clinger will officiate. Burial will be in Tomlinson Cemetery, Mendon.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Cisco Funeral Home, Celina.
