Baseball: Lincolnview advances to regional finals

HAMLER — Lincolnview coach Eric Fishpaw threw everyone a curveball before the game even started.

Fishpaw elected to start No. 2 pitcher Dane Ebel instead of Ohio State-bound Landon Price.

And, the move couldn’t have gone much better for the Lancers.

Ebel gave up one unearned run in an 8-1 Lincolnview victory against Leipsic in a Division IV baseball regional semifinal Thursday at Patrick Henry’s Garrold Parratt Field.

Ebel (6-0) went all seven innings and gave up one run, none earned, on six hits. He struck out 10 and walked none.

Now the Lancers have their ace, Price, ready for today in the regional finals.

“I didn’t really sleep the past couple of nights,” Fishpaw said. “You don’t really want to make the wrong decision. … We wanted to put ourselves in the best possible position to make it to state.

“We have two good pitchers in Landon Price and Dane Ebel, both are undefeated on the year. It was a tough decision, but we had all the confidence in the world going with Dane on the mound today.’’

Ebel consistently threw his fastball and breaking ball for strikes. He threw 107 pitches, 74 for strikes.

Ebel’s complete command of all his pitches even surprised him.

“I haven’t had the curveball all year,” Ebel said. “It’s the first game I’ve had it and it was working. I said, ‘All right, I’ll keep throwing it.’

“I didn’t even have it in the bullpen. It just came to me (on the mound). My catcher (Carson Fox) and I transferred a smile back and forth when it happened.’’

Fishpaw added, “Of the seven innings, he retired the leadoff batter seven times. … He had good command.’’

Ebel said he also used a slider and occasional change-up.

Lincolnview (22-6) will meet Antwerp (18-5) in the regional championship game at 5:30 p.m. today at Patrick Henry.

Antwerp defeated Plymouth in the first regional game of the day, 11-1.

Antwerp also elected not to use its No. 1 pitcher, Bowling Green-bound Luke Krouse, so he will also be ready for today.

Leipsic ends its year 17-8.

“I’m super proud of these guys,” Leipsic coach Darren Henry said. “Nobody expected this after those seniors we lost last year. We had two freshmen in the lineup, two sophomores in the lineup, Quin (Schroeder) playing on a bum ankle and I didn’t think he was going to play today and he gutted it out.

“I’m disappointed, but I’m proud of them.’’

The Lancers scored one in the first and two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

Leipsic got within 3-1 in the fifth with an unearned run.

The Lancers came back with two in the home fifth to make it 5-1. They added three more in the sixth to make it 8-1.

Leipsic starter Luke Spoors went 4 1/3 innings and gave up five runs, all earned, on eight hits.

He struck out three and walked three.

“He needs the corners and he couldn’t get the ball down,” Henry said.

Mason Brandt came on the fifth and went one inning, giving up three runs on three hits.

Ebel had his command from the first pitch, continually throwing his breaking ball for strikes. He struck out two in the first inning, both on breaking balls.

“He did exactly what he does,” Fishpaw said. “He commands the strike zone with (catcher) Carson Fox.’’

Lincolnview scored one in the first when Ebel singled and Carson Fox walked.

Caden Hanf’s RBI single to left made it 1-0.

Cole Binkley’s two-run single to center gave the Lancers a 3-0 lead in the second.

The Vikings got within 3-1 in the fifth.

Tyler Lammers singled and Caleb Ellerbrock put down a bunt, which Ebel fielded, but threw into right field to put runners on first and third.

Brandt’s RBI single to right made it 3-1 Lincolnview.

“At that point, I said I had to get myself out of it,” Ebel said.

In the fifth, the Lancers’ Jack Dunlap’s RBI groundout to second made it 4-1.

Austin Bockrath scored from third on a wild pitch and it was 5-1.

The Lancers made it 8-1 in the sixth with three runs. Hanf’s two-run double to right kicked the margin to 7-1.

For the Lancers, Binkley went 3 for 4 with two RBI.

Hanf was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI.

Bockrath was 2 for 3 with one RBI.

For Leipsic, Brandt was 3 for 4 with one RBI.
