Lima Senior holds off Northmont

Lima Senior held off a late Northmont surge to secure a 13-10 win and its first victory of the season on a rainy Tuesday.

The Spartans improve to 1-1 on the season and the Thunderbolts fall to 0-2 on the year.

Lima Senior’s Davion Browning scored six goals and teammate Aaron Bowsher notched four scores. Collin Bocian put in three goals.

Lima Senior head coach Nathan Garlock, who enters his fifth season, said he was proud of the team’s effort. Coming into this year, Garlock has 15 new players on the roster and knows it will take some time for them to get accustomed to playing at the varsity level.

“I have 15 brand new guys who have never held a lacrosse stick before, and they have about three weeks under their belts so it is a challenge in a new area,” Garlock said. “We graduated all of our depth so we have guys who are learning on the fly and I push them hard so I am proud of them. They are very coach-able, and we have made tons of strides even if it seems to some people it may not look that way.

“They have come a long way in four weeks, so for them to come around tonight after a difficult start with some ups and downs throughout the games it was nice to see them close it out.”

This trio of Browning, Bowsher and Bocian were instrumental in the Spartans’ offensive performance in the second period that allowed Lima Senior to go on a 7-1 run in the last four minutes and give the Spartans a 9-4 lead going into the second half. The two teams scored twice in the third quarter and then in the fourth, the Thunderbolts outscored the Spartans 4-2 to make it close.

It was a slow start for both teams. In the first period, the score was at 1-1. The Thunderbolts grabbed a 3-2 lead at the 5:01 mark before the Spartans came storming back with its game-changing run.

Garlock said it was about making adjustments and utilizing the team’s speed to get the offense going in this game.

“We spent a lot of time watching film after that loss to Canal Winchester Friday night,” Garlock said. “We spent s lot of time Monday breaking down that game, and we left a lot of things on the field and so we wanted to make adjustments. One of our strengths is we are fast, and we are athletic and if we can spread people out, the opportunities are there, and it is just a matter of taking advantage of that. We didn’t do that in the first quarter but we made the adjustment in the second quarter and that really got the offense going.”
