Lima Senior to join Toledo City League

Lima Senior High School will become a member of the Toledo City League in the 2023-24 school year.

That move for the Spartans’ athletic teams was approved by the Lima City Schools Board of Education on Thursday.

Lima Senior has been searching for a new league home since the Three Rivers Athletic Conference broke apart last spring when Findlay, Fremont Ross, Toledo Whitmer and Oregon Clay accepted an invititation to join the Northern Lakes League.

Lima Senior and five other TRAC schools – Toledo St. John’s, Toledo Central Catholic, Toledo St. Francis, Toledo Notre Dame and Toledo St. Ursula were not invited to join the NLL. The 2022-23 school year will be the final season for the TRAC, which was established in 2011.

With the addition of the Spartans, the Toledo City League will be a seven-team league. Its current members are Toledo Bowsher, Toledo Rogers, Toledo Scott, Toledo Start, Toledo Waite and Toledo Woodward.

Finding a new league home was something Lima Senior always wanted but wasn’t sure it would be able to find.

At the time the end of the TRAC was announced Lima Senior and the Toledo City League weren’t close to getting together.

There had been talk of trying to keep the TRAC together by adding new members but that didn’t go anywhere. Inquiries to other leagues produced no interest, either.

“It has come about more recently. I would say over the summer,” Lima Senior athletic director John Zell said. “It kind of got going from there. I think the conversations really picked up last spring and into the summer.

“Being independent was probably our only other option,” he said. “We want our student athletes to be able to compete for league championships and receive league honors.”

Lima Senior and the Toledo City League will have a four-year contract. The Toledo City League has been in existence since 1926.

There has been no announcement of where the five Toledo Catholic schools in the TRAC might go after next year, though Zell said he thinks the Detroit Catholic League might be their leading option.
