Wrestling: Allen East wins sectional crown

LIMA — In the postseason tournament, it’s all about counting to four.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class at the sectional wrestling tournament advance to the district tournament.

Then, the top four placers in each weight class at districts will advance to the state wrestling tournament. The state tournament will take place at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State from March 11 to 13.

At Saturday’s Division III sectional tournament at Lima Central Catholic, longtime Allen East head coach Mike Abbey was very busy counting to four.

By the end of the day, Allen East had 10 district qualifiers, who will be competing at the Division III district tournament at Troy’s Hobart Arena on Friday and Saturday.

Allen East also notched its third consecutive sectional team title Saturday.

The Mustangs ended the tournament with 202 points. Second-place Coldwater recorded 157.5 points. Spencerville finished a close third (150), while Wayne Trace (149.5) was right on Spencerville’s heels. Columbus Grove recorded a solid fifth-place finish (137) in the 14-team field.

“We had 10 out of 11 (wrestlers qualify for districts). So, it was a pretty good day. A couple freshmen made it out, that probably weren’t expecting to. My 157-pounder, Jack Stark (third, 157 pounds), didn’t win a match last weekend at league (Northwest Conference Championships), and he took third place today. He had a favorable draw for sure, but he just came out and wrestled hard. So, I was really happy for him.”

Kade Wireman (150), Chase Miller (165) and Eli Criblez (285) all notched sectional titles for the Mustangs.

“My champs are pretty tough,” Abbey said. “Kade (Wireman) at 150, looked pretty darn solid. Chase (Miller) at 165, dominated. My heavyweight (Eli Criblez) was solid.

“So, we’ll be in the (wrestling) room this week, getting ready to go again. Then we’ll head on down to Hobart (Arena) on Friday, and see what we can do.”

Criblez (41-0), a junior, notched his 100th career victory Saturday. Last season, Criblez was the state runner-up at 285.

For Wireman (42-4), Saturday’s sectional title was the third for the junior standout. Wireman is a two-time state-qualifier.

In Saturday’s finals, Wireman recorded a 5-1 decision against Bath’s Ezekiel Burkholder (34-4).

“I knew I would have a tough match in the finals, but I had my mind set on winning my third (sectional title), and that’s what I did,” Wireman said, “I have to keep my mindset right for next week.”

For Allen East’s Chase Miller, it’s now all about staying focused on each opponent that he faces next weekend. Miller (26-3) notched his third sectional title Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to wrestling some of the top guys next week,” Miller said. “It’s definitely one of the tougher districts around. There are a lot of top guys that come out of there. There are some really good wrestlers that know what they’re doing.”

Last season, Miller was a state-qualifier. This year, Miller eclipsed a few milestones. He recorded his fourth NWC title last week. This season, he also went past 150 wins for his career, as well as eclipsing 100 career pins.

Lima Central Catholic senior Gavin Caprella won his third sectional title Saturday.

Caprella (31-3) was pleased on winning another sectional title. He is focused on returning to the state tournament. Last season, Caprella placed fifth in the 113-pound weight class at the Division III state tournament.

In his championship match Saturday in the 120-pound weight class, Caprella pinned Coldwater’s Austin Hamilton late in the first period.

“It’s postseason now. So, I’m just trying to get on and off the mat,” Caprella said. “I just want to put it away and not take any chances.”

Caprella said he worked really hard in the offseason in hopes of getting back to the state tournament and making another run for a state title.

“I think I’ve really made a lot of big steps,” Caprella said. “Coach (Nick) Sanchez really knows what we need to work on.

“But it’s one match at a time. You can’t look past anybody. You have to keep your head on the grindstone and keep pushing forward, no matter who it is.”

Caprella admitted that he wasn’t satisfied at placing fifth at state last season.

“It’s a little frustrating, but it’s in the past now. I have to look forward. I know I can be a state champ this year. So, that’s all that really matters,” he said.

Spencerville junior Carder Miller notched his 100th career win Saturday in big fashion as he also won the sectional title at 126 pounds.

This marks the third district tournament that Miller has qualified for. He did not place at the previous two district tournaments.

This time around, Miller (43-2) is hoping to make it to the state tournament. However, he realizes that it will be a lofty challenge.

“The goal is to at least get on the (awards) podium (at districts) and make it to state. So, I’m really excited to get my opportunity,” Miller said.

Miller’s teammate, Nyah Hodge-Miller (37-10), won his first sectional title Saturday. Hodge-Miller won the crown in the 113-pound weight class.

“This year, I kind of turned up the jets and worked through it,” Hodge-Miller said. “I can’t say that I’m not surprised. It was a hard year with good competition.”

Other sectional champions Saturday included Coldwater’s Caleb Stammen (190), Columbus Grove’s Landen Schroeder (157) and A.J. Schafer (215), Mason Vonderwell (175) of Delphos St. John’s, Kenton’s Anthony Hunt (138) and Wayne Trace’s Corbin Kimmel (106), Hunter Long (132) and Jarrett Hornish (144).
