Regal Cinemas will begin to reopen theaters on Aug. 21

At a time when rising COVID-19 numbers have many wondering if indoor movie theaters ever will reopen, national theater chain Regal Cinemas has announced a date.

On its website, Regal announced its theaters will begin to reopen Aug. 21, with no further specifics. In the Canton area, Regal operates Regal Massillon and Regal Interstate Park in Green.

Regal’s announcement includes a detailed rundown on safety measures for reopening, including contactless payment, sanitization of auditoriums between shows with electrostatic foggers, daily health screenings of employees who will wear masks, and sanitizer dispensers. Auditorium capacity will be reduced to 50% where mandated and two seats will be left open between groups.

Guests will be required to wear face masks in the lobby, hallways and restaurants, and may remove them in the auditorium when eating and drinking.

Cinemark Theatres has no scheduled reopening dates.

Cinemark originally announced it would reopen its theaters in four phases from June 19 through July 10. Regal previously announced plans to reopen all of its theaters during July.
