Group home resident dies after confrontation with police

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — Police say a resident of a group home died after a confrontation with officers near a park in Virginia.

Fairfax County police Chief Col. Edwin Roessler Jr. says 45-year-old Paul Gianelos wandered away from his group Wednesday afternoon at a park in the Falls Church area.

Roessler said at a news conference that an officer found Gianelos about a mile and a half away and asked that his caregiver meet them. The chief said Gianelos became combative, and four officers restrained him, handcuffing him behind his back.

Roessler says Gianelos was alert and breathing when police summoned paramedics. He says when paramedics arrived, Gianelos suffered what appeared to be cardiac arrest and died at a hospital.

A spokesman did not know Gianelos' race or the race of the officers involved.
