SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee tossed an anvil on the gas pedal early. The Indians didn’t take it off until they were outright Western Buckeye League champions.Jerin Butler tossed in 28 points, with five 3-pointers, to help Shawnee to a convincing 82-66 boys basketball victory over Ottawa-Glandorf on Saturday at Lappin Gymnasium. It marked Shawnee’s first outright boys basketball title since 1966.“That was a good team,” Shawnee coach Nick Bertke said of the ’66 squad. “To be mentioned in that breath, is tremendous. It’s a tremendous credit to our kids and how hard they worked.”Brent Farley added 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Indians. Cody Smith scored 17 points, while Kyle Strawn scored 10 with two 3-pointers.“We were ready and focused,” Butler said. “We didn’t want to share it (the WBL title) with Defiance.”Shawnee ends the regular season 17-2, 9-0 in the WBL. O-G is 15-5, 6-3 in the WBL.Shawnee used its quickness, defensive pressure and rebounding to bounce out to first-quarter leads of 12-4 and 20-7. Shawnee forced 12 first-quarter turnovers and 26 for the game. That helped the Indians lead 20-10 at the end of the quarter.“We came out on fire and played good man-to-man defense,” Farley said. “We worked hard on defense and that gave us the up tempo on offense.”The Indians scored 10 baskets in the opening quarter, with nine coming on layups and five on the fastbreak.“We knew this was going to be a transition game coming in,” Butler said.O-G came back behind Justin Schomaeker (17 points) in the second quarter. Schomaeker scored seven in the quarter, including a fast-break layup which brought the Titans within 28-27 with 2:40 left in the half. That was as close as the Titans would get.Butler then hit a 3-pointer. Shawnee picked up a turnover and Farley delivered a three-point play, with a driving layup. That pushed the Shawnee lead to 34-27 and it took a 38-31 lead into the half.“We got it to one, then had turnovers, missed shots and Butler hit the three,” O-G coach Josh Leslie said. “That was it right there.“They’re good. I can’t sugarcoat that. … We have to regroup and get ready for the tournament, because in all honesty, we won’t see a team as good as them.”Shawnee didn’t let O-G back in the game in the third quarter. Butler knocked down four straight 3-pointers to help the Indians outscore O-G 14-6 to start the quarter.“In the third quarter, I was getting open looks,” Butler said. “My teammates got me the ball and I was able to knock down shots.”Farley’s breakaway slam dunk revved up the crowd and ballooned the lead to 66-49 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.Shawnee outscored O-G 34-21 in the third with seven 3-pointers, to take a 72-52 lead.Shawnee shot 57 percent from the field for the game, including 12 of 15 in the third. This marks the Indians’ best record since the 1966 team went 24-1.“It means a lot to get the outright championship,” Butler said. “We can focus on the tournament now.”
