WILLSHIRE — A teenaged boy was knee-deep in frigid waters Tuesday night after driving into a flooded part of state Route 49, according to the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen, who wasn't identified Tuesday night, apparently drove around a "Road Closed" sign on state Route 49 near Piqua Road, north of Willshire. Deputies and Van Wert Fire and EMS responded to the scene at 8:21 p.m. Tuesday.

A sheriff's office dispatcher said the boy apparently drove through high waters until his vehicle wouldn’t go on anymore. Crews removed the teen from about 1 1/2 feet of water after 20 minutes. Police officials and the boy communicated by yelling to one another from a distance. At one point, he said he had numbness in his legs.

Emergency crews transported the boy to a local hospital. Additional details weren't available about his condition late Tuesday.
