Wapakoneta advances to girls' state championship game

COLUMBUS - Devon Golden scored eight of her 13 points in the final five minutes to help Wapakoneta earn its first trip to the title game with a 40-31 win over Warsaw River View in a Division II semifinal on Friday.

Leading 26-25, the Redskins (25-1) scored six straight points, four by Golden, to take a 32-25 lead with 2:20 remaining.

After Kari Daugherty hit a short jumper for No. 7 River View (23-3), Kailey Schneider responded for the Redskins with a driving layup past the taller Daugherty to regain the seven-point margin.

Daugherty followed with two free throws but Golden made two fouls to make it 36-29 with 1:26 left and Wapakoneta held the ball for the majority of the remaining time and made four more free throws. Daugherty, the Associated Press Division II co-player of the year, led all scorers with 19 points.

She was 7 of 17 from the floor while her teammates missed 21 of 26 shots.
