WAPAKONETA — Thad Vernon turned in a huge effort to lift Shawnee’s boys basketball team to a Western Buckeye League win at Wapakoneta 54-51 on Friday.
However, Shawnee had to withstand a furious second-half effort by Wapak to grab the win. Shawnee jumped out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter and led 37-22 at halftime. Wapakoneta answered by outscoring its visitor 9-2 in the third and 20-10 in the fourth.
Wapakoneta led with less than a minute to play before Shawnee hit two free throws and Marquis Miller hit a putback to go up 52-51 with 21.5 seconds remaining.
Vernon finished with 24 points and Trey Brock added 9 points for the Indians. Travis Bertram finished with 22 points for Wapakoneta, Alex Greve had 13 points and Brandon Miller finished with 11.
Shawnee improved to 3-17 overall and 1-7 in the WBL while Wapakoneta falls to 11-9, 4-4.
Elida 79, Celina 55
CELINA — Elida did its part in the WBL standings, beating host Celina to move back into a tie for first in the league. Bath fell to O-G, meaning both Bath and Elida are tied atop the WBL standings at 7-1. Bath takes on Celina at home Friday while Elida plays host to Defiance on Friday.
Dakota Mathias finished with a game-high 24 points for Elida (12-8 overall), Aric Thompson buried seven 3-pointers and scored 21 points, Louis Gray had 15 points for Elida and Austin Allemeir scored 11 points. Matt Buschur scored 18 points for Celina (10-10, 4-4) while Grant Laffin and Ryan Hoyng both had 10 points.
Spencerville 60, Lincolnview 31
SPENCERVILLE — Eleven Bearcats scored points as Spencerville led early and never looked back for the NWC win. Spencerville led 13-3 after one quarter and 33-10 at halftime. Derek Goecke scored 11 points for the Bearcats (11-7, 7-1), Devon Cook had 10 points and Ben Bowers scored 8 points. Kyle Williams finished with 9 points for the Lancers (8-13, 4-4) and Justis Dowdy scored 8 points.
Bluffton 46, Delphos Jefferson 39
BLUFFTON — Michael Donley scored a game-high 19 points to lift Bluffton to the NWC victory. Levi Kistler scored 11 points for the Pirates, who improved to 9-11 overall, 3-5 in the NWC. Trey Smith had 12 points for Jefferson (4-15, 2-6) and Ross Thompson added 9 points.
Crestview 39, Columbus Grove 26
COLUMBUS GROVE — Cam Etzler scored 24 points and the defense did the rest to lead the Knights past NWC-host Columbus Grove. Crestview is 17-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference while Grove is 13-7, 5-3. Crestview made 5-of-9 3-pointers, Etzler had 4 treys, and finished 13-of-35 from the field while Grove was 11-36 from the field (3-10 from behind the arc). Collin Grothaus and Will Vorhees both had 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Paulding 63, Ada 41
ADA — Lance Foor’s 22 points paced Paulding to the NWC win. Austin Dumbaugh had 9 points for Ada. Paulding improved to 15-5 overall and 5-3 in the NWC while Ada is 6-13, 1-7.
Van Wert 60, St. Marys 52
ST. MARYS — Garet Fledderjohann scored an unreal 40 points for St. Marys but Van Wert had four players reach double-digits in the WBL win. Fledderjohann had four 3-pointers, 8 two-point buckets and shot 12-of-17 from the free throw line for St. Marys (6-14, 1-7). A.J. Smith scored 15 points for Van Wert (10-10, 3-5), Matt Bidlack scored 13 points and both Nathan Stoller and Conner Holliday had 11 points each.
Kalida 41, Continental 39
CONTINENTAL — Devin Kortokrax scored 14 points and Kalida survived its trip to Continental for a PCL win. Kalida is 7-12 overall, 5-2 in the league while Continental is 6-13, 0-6. Randy Zeller scored 13 points for Kalida. Tyler Dockery had 12 points for the Pirates and Chaz Slattman had 10 points.
Fairbanks 51, Perry 42
MILFORD CENTER — Bruce Hodges scored 12 points for Perry in the NWCC loss. Jared Poling scored 11 points for the Commodores (6-14, 3-4).
USV 52, Lehman Catholic
McGUFFEY — Woody Prater finished with 16 points to help Upper Scioto Valley win in non-league action. USV improves to 15-4. Austin Howard finished with 12 points and Lane Hurley scored 9 points for the Rams.
Marion Local 71, Parkway 35
MARIA STEIN — With the game tied 17-17 late in the second, Marion Local went on a 6-0 run and never looked back for the MAC win. Marion Local is 8-11 overall, 1-6 in the MAC while Parkway is 2-18, 0-8. Luke Knapke had 14 points and 10 boards for the Flyers and Brant Barna had 12 points for Parkway.
Minster 43, Versailles 42
MINSTER — Ethan Wolf scored 13 points for Minster and Adam Niemeyer scored 10 in the MAC win. Minster is 12-8 overall, 3-5 in the MAC, Versailles is 16-5, 5-4.
St. Henry 58, Fort Recovery 43
ST. HENRY — Kyle Stahl netted 21 points for St. Henry in the MAC win. Stahl also had 6 boards and 4 assists for the Redskins (17-4, 7-1) while Jordan Bender and Ryan Mikesell had 12 each. Wade Gehaus had 14 points for Fort Recovery (16-4, 4-4) and Elijah Kahlig scored 12 points.
Coldwater 64, New Knoxville 62
COLDWATER — Austin Bruns scored 23 points and Coldwater edged by visiting New Knoxville. Jake Allen led New Knoxville with 24 points. Coldwater is 8-10, 3-4 in the MAC while New Knoxville is 10-9, 3-5.
Leipsic 69, Pandora-Gilboa 41
PANDORA — Caleb Barrera scored 12 points for Leipsic in the Blanchard Valley Conference win. Austin Brown and Devin Mangas each had 11 points for the Vikings (16-4, 7-2). Seth Schmenk scored 13 points for the Rockets (4-16, 2-7).
