The Lima Area Women’s Match Play Tournament tees off Wednesday for a five-day run at five area golf courses.
The tournament will begin with a qualifying round on Wednesday at Tamarac Golf Club, followed by another qualifying round at Hawthorne Hills Golf Club on Thursday.
The golfers will go into match play on Friday at The Oaks Golf Club. The semifinal round is scheduled at Hidden Creek Golf Club on Saturday, with the finals at the Shawnee Country Club on Sunday.
Sheridan Balyeat, the defending champion, as well as last year’s runner-up, Kate Hoops, have both committed to play in the tournament.
Balyeat, a former Shawnee High School golfer, won the tournament championship 1-up over Hoops last year. She won her last three match play rounds on an extra hole. She is a junior on Ohio State’s golf team.
Hoops, also a former Shawnee High School golfer, was the 2010 champion.
She is a senior at the University of Toledo, where she averaged 77.3 strokes per round last year, with a low round of 71.
Last month, Hoops narrowly missed qualifying for the LPGA Marathon Classic in Toledo when she lost on the second hole of a playoff to LPGA player Jean Bartholomew, who sank a long birdie putt to win. Hoops shot 71 in the qualifier.
The tournament is open to all women 18 years old and older who live in Allen County or an adjacent county.
