LIMA — Lima Senior’s volleyball team seemed to be digging itself a hole throughout Tuesday’s match against Shawnee.

The Spartans were able to recover the first couple of times.

After that, the deficits became too much.

Shawnee defeated Lima Senior 3-2 in Tuesday’s volleyball match at Lima Senior, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 25-8, 15-5. Shawnee improves to 4-7 on the season.

“We compensated for where their strong points were,” Shawnee head coach Amy Knight said. “We worked against their rotation and got ourselves the matchups we wanted. We’re doing a lot better with our serves right now, and communicating well in our back row.”

Shawnee got contributions from several girls en route to earning the victory. Shay Wilkerson was one of the big performers, getting 19 kills and 8 aces. Beth Pohjala also got 12 kills and 4 aces for Shawnee, while Ashley Strong added 21 assists.

“We needed to work as a team tonight,” Wilkerson said. “We wanted to come out tonight and really finish the games we started.”

Shawnee got big leads early in four of the five sets, starting with a 6-1 lead in the first set. Lima Senior battled back to make that a close game down the stretch, but eventually lost to Shawnee 25-21.

The second set was the only one Lima Senior started in a strong way, getting ahead 15-10 and maintaining that lead en route to a 25-23 win. The Spartans then battled back from a 7-1 deficit early in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage over Shawnee.

“We were just trying to stay positive,” Pohjala said. “We thought if we could get ahead we could let everyone relax and play their best.”

Shawnee exploded in the fourth set, scoring the first seven points of the set, and eventually building an 11-1 lead. Lima Senior could never come close to recovering this time, mustering only eight points before Shawnee could take the fourth set to even the score.

Shawnee then came out in the fifth set with another strong 8-2 lead, another deficit the Spartans just couldn’t back from. Shawnee clinched the match with a 15-5 fifth set victory.

“Shawnee did a good job,” Lima Senior coach John Zell said. “Serving was tough on us. We couldn’t pass the ball up and when you can’t do that, a lot of things start to go downhill. You can’t get your middles involved, and you can’t set up your offense.”

Other leaders for Shawnee included Brooke Heatwole and Ashley King. King had 16 assists for the Indians, along with 6 aces. Heatwole worked 13 digs.

Kyra Allen had 25 digs and 4 aces for the Spartans on Tuesday night, while Kianna Collins added 9 kills. Mara Zell came up with 32 assists.

Lima Senior falls to 4-9 on the season.
