LIMA — The second day of the Lima City Singles Tennis Tournament was forced indoors Wednesday because of inclement weather.

But that didn’t dampen the play of area players.

The City Tournament was slated to take place at the Collett Street Courts. However, with the threatening weather, the tournament was moved to the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center

The defending men’s champion Jeff Brown won his first-round match, defeating Brandon French 6-0, 6-0. Brown is a former standout on University of Northwestern Ohio tennis team.

Last year’s defending women’s champion, Lauren Rovner, had a bye in first-round action for the women.

Brown, the No. 1 seed, had little trouble against French. With the victory, Brown will not play until Friday. He will then face the winner of today’s match between Alex Swick and Jason Barton, in a semifinal on Friday.

“Tonight’s match went pretty smooth,” Brown said. “I played pretty well. This is awfully fun for me. But, we’ll see how it goes. …I’ll just take it step by step and make it happen.”

Rovner, a former Shawnee standout and sophomore on the Case Western Reserve University tennis team, will face Paige Collins today in her first-round match.

“My first season (at Case) was great,” Rovner said. “I ended up on the traveling team. So, I made the cut on that. I played mostly exhibition matches. We had a very strong freshman class, so it was hard to start. But I got a chance to play and even got a chance to start over spring break in California. I won a lot of three-setters and gained a lot of confidence. I just learned so much in one year.”

No. 2 seed Sam Rutter defeated Alex French 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday. John Kidd, the No. 3 seed, had little trouble in his first-round match, defeating Suresh Rajasekaran 6-0, 6-0. No. 4 seed Alex Swick also did quick work in his opening match, beating Avinash Rajasekaran 6-0, 6-0.

Wednesday was the first day for the women to take to the court. All the top seeds for the women will begin play today.

Mary Lou Roush, the No. 2 seed, will face Rachael Roberts today in her opening match. No. 3 seed Kaylee Davis will open play today when she takes to the court to face Kiersten Wellons.
