TEAM OUTLOOK: Wapakoneta is loaded, as the Redskins return their entire starting lineup from a team that lost to Columbus St. Francis DeSales 3-2 in the state championship game. The Redskins have a huge edge in returning their 1-2 pitching attack in left-hander Johnny Crawford (10-0, 0.44 ERA) and Chace Culver (5-4, 1.99). This team has everything: Pitching, defense and speed. The Redskins will be poised to make another deep run in the tournament.

TEAM OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs have 10 veterans back so offense should be a strength. The team will work on consistency on defense. Last summer’s team reached the district ACME tourney and should once make a run in both leagues.

COACH: Doug Geary

YEARS, RECORD AT SCHOOL: 3rd, 23-24

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 10-14 (4-5 NWC)

DIVISION: III

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 22-9 (8-1 NWC co-champions)

DIVISION: III

PROMISING NEWCOMERS: INF/C Brad Stolly (Soph.); P Trevor Hoff (Jr.); P/UTIL Jamaal Hairston (Jr.); P/UTIL Aaron Wilker (Jr.): OF Jacob Judy (Soph.)

TEAM OUTLOOK: The nucleus is back, six starters in all, from last year’s team that lost in the Division III state championship game 1-0 to Wheelersburg. A huge loss is No. 1 pitcher Travis Clark (9-1, 1.94), who is now at Siena Heights. But No. 2 pitcher Nick Watkins (6-3, 0.95) is back after giving up one run on two hits in the state finals. Defense should be a huge strength with Colin Stolly (.425) at shortstop, Dee (.375) behind the plate and Huffman (.339) in center field. The T-Birds should be strong again and will again aim for an NWC title and successful tourney run.

PROMISING NEWCOMERS: C Guy Harder (Jr.); INF/P Trey Schroeder (Sr.); INF/P Kyle Kauser (Jr.); OF/P Corbin Edwards (Fr.); INF/P Damon Egnor (Fr.); OF Justin Adams (Jr.).

TEAM OUTLOOK: Outfielder Vance leads the list of returnees, as he hit .430 last year and was second team all-NWC. A team strength will be the depth of the pitching staff. The Panthers will work on making the consistent plays on defense to help out the pitching. Paulding will be hoping the pitching and defense holds down the fort until the offense jells.

Spencerville

COACH: Troy Montenery

YEARS, RECORD AT SCHOOL: 3rd, 24-24; 9th overall, 89-72

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 16-11 (5-4 NWC) (district semifinals)

TEAM OUTLOOK: Kalida will hope to replace graduated standouts pitcher Paul Utendorf and Nick Guisinger. The Wildcats do return Recker (.397, 17 SBs) behind the plate. Kalida has a strong freshman class, but this team is young and will have inexperience at most positions.

Leipsic

COACH: Darren Henry

YEARS, RECORD AT SCHOOL: N/A

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 25-4 (6-1 PCL co-champions; 9-0 BVC champions, regional finals).

DIVISION: IV

The team will be young, with only two seniors and two juniors on the roster. Playing consistent defense will be a huge key to the Wildcats posting another winning record.

PROMISING NEWCOMERS: OF/1B/P Drew Wagner (Sr.); 2B/3B Craig Klausing (Sr.); OF Clay Courtney (Sr.); OF Ben Wrasman (Jr.).

TEAM OUTLOOK: The Blue Jays will hand the ball to right-hander Curtis Geise (5-5, 1.78) for all the big games. His 84-to-86 mph fastball was a key in getting the Blue Jays to the state tournament two years ago. Buescher and Warnecke (3-0, 1.84) will also see time on the mound. TEAM OUTLOOK: Ohio State-bound right-hander Adam Niemeyer (5-0, 0.00 ERA, 45 innings, 76 strikeouts) returns to lead the two-time defending state champs. Niemeyer batted, but a sore arm didn’t allow him to pitch in the state tournament. State tourney MVP pitcher Doug Huber has graduated. He threw 10 innings and gave up no earned runs in the state tournament. Five starters return, including shortstop Poeppelman, center fielder Eilerman, third baseman Knapke and catcher Wolf. That should be enough firepower, providing Niemeyer stays healthy, to give Minster a good shot at defending its title.
