WAPAKONETA ?? There wasn??t even a spot on the scoreboard to register the extent of the damage.

But there it was.

In the sixth inning Shawnee banged out 11 runs on nine hits, with the help of three Wapakoneta errors.

The 11-run sixth sent 15 hitters to bat as Shawnee posted an 11-3 baseball victory over Wapakoneta on Tuesday in the Western Buckeye League opener at Wapakoneta.

??We always try to focus on winning every inning,? Shawnee??s Cory Wilder said. ??Today we won one inning, but we won it real big.?

Wapakoneta dropped its fourth straight and stands 2-4, 0-1 in the WBL. Shawnee is 3-4, 1-0 in the WBL.

Wapakoneta ace left-hander Johnny Crawford (1-1) suffered his first loss in two years, after going 10-0 last year. He cruised into the sixth with a 3-0 lead and had given up only two hits.

Then came the wild and woolly sixth inning.

Wilder led off the Shawnee sixth by hitting a sinking liner to left, which was dropped. It was originally ruled a hit, but was officially changed to an error after the game. Tyler Anderson hit a come-backer to the mound, which Crawford threw wide to second and everyone was safe.

Two batters, two errors.

Zach Bailey then took a Crawford pitch the other way for a two-run double down the right-field line to bring Shawnee within 3-2. William Kleffner??s RBI single to right tied the game at 3. Casey Mulcahy beat out a high-chopping infield single in front of the plate.

Shawnee coach Scott Newman said the plan was to go to right field off Crawford.

??We??ve worked on that all year long,? Newman said.

That was it for Crawford.

A.J. Etzkorn came on and gave up a bunt single to Tobe Azeez. With the bases loaded, Trevor Anderson walked to force in the go-ahead run and make it 4-3, Shawnee.

Zack Peake lined a two-run single to center and it was 6-3. Wilder, batting for the second time in the inning, hit a two-run single to right-center field to make it 8-3.

??I sliced it and wind kind of took it,? Wilder said.

Wilder later scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-3.

Casey Mulcahy, the 14th batter of the inning, hit a two-run single and it was 11-3.

Bailey, Kleffner and Mulcahy all had two hits in the inning. Wilder, Bailey and Kleffner all scored two runs in the inning.

Crawford went five innings and gave up five runs, one earned, on six hits. He struck out two and walked two. Crawford??s fastball hit 84 mph once, but was mostly hovering between 81 to 83.

The anticipated showdown between two of the top pitchers in Ohio, Crawford and Wilder, didn??t happen because Wilder had the flu. He was limited to only playing third base.

Tyler Anderson, who missed his last start with the flu, went the first three innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits.

??We knew he would probably give us three innings,? Newman said. ??He??s been sick and we didn??t want to overextend him. And Zach (Bailey) came to us before we left the school and said he wanted the ball.?

Bailey picked up the victory by tossing the final four innings and giving up one run on three hits. He struck out three and walked one.

??I pitched Saturday, but I told him I could pitch if he needed me,? Bailey said. ??I tried to throw strikes and hit the outside corner.?

Mulcahy led Shawnee going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Bailey went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Peake and Wilder were both 1 for 5 with two RBIs.

??I was sick all weekend,? Wilder said. ??I woke up today and felt all right, so I was going to play no matter what.?

Josh Apple went 2 for 3 for Wapakoneta.

The Redskins made four errors and have made 15 errors in their last four games ?? all losses.

??When one thing goes wrong, it all goes wrong,? Wapakoneta coach Jason Brandt said of the sixth inning. ? ??I don??t think our problem is getting on base, it??s getting guys in once we get on base and playing a little bit of defense.?
