SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Anyone looking for a shot of the day at the Lima City Men’s Golf Championship on Friday at the Shawnee Country Club didn’t have to settle for just one.

Shot of the Day No. 1: Mike Garlock’s 6-iron to within a foot of the pin on No. 18 to clinch a trip to the semifinals in the Championship Flight.

Shot of the Day No. 2: Steve Creps’ eagle from 85 yards out on No. 7 to finish his marathon 25-hole match with Richard Groves in the Super Seniors Flight.

Garlock defeated Brock Howe 2-up to set up a Championship Flight semifinal matchup today with Dylan Klein, a 3-and-2 winner over Tom Leidy.

In today’s other Championship Flight semifinal, Andy Connell will go against Phil Trueblood, the only former champion still in that flight. Connell beat Dave Kortokrax 6-and-5 and Trueblood won 5-and-4 over Joe Whittaker.

Garlock was one hole down to Howe, playing in his first city tournament, going into No. 17.

But he dropped a 7-footer for a par to win that hole, then hit what he called almost the best 6-iron he had ever struck to set up a birdie at No. 18.

“It’s close. If it had gone in, it would have been the best,” he said. “I was playing for the front of the green to roll it up and it rolled a lot closer than I thought it was going to get.

“I saw it roll up and I saw it coming toward the hole and thought it was probably about five feet in front of it. But I got up there and it was a foot to the right and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s OK. That’s working,’ ” Garlock said.

The Trueblood-Whittaker match was highly anticipated because it had a two-time champion (Whittaker) against the 2011 winner.

Even the two competitors were looking forward to it because it was the first time they’d gone head to head in a city tournament. But after going two down after four holes, Trueblood was in control all the way.

“I made a bad mistake on No. 2 and he won that hole and he made a great birdie on No. 4, so I’m two down standing on the tee at No. 5,” Trueblood said.

“I got down two early and fought back and got it tied up. Then I won a couple holes and birdied nine to go two up at the turn. At that point I knew I just needed to play solid and make him make birdies to get back into the match,” he said.

Whittaker said, “I did not have it today. Things just weren’t going my way. Some days you’ve got it and some days you don’t. Obviously, we’ve played a lot of golf together but not against each other. It would have been better for everyone if it had gone on a lot longer.”

In a match that did go on a lot longer, Creps and Groves kept playing and playing and playing until Creps finished it with his eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.

“Dick and I both played really well. I kept thinking, ‘He’s got to make a mistake.’ It seemed like if one of us got into trouble, we’d both end up bogeying the hole,” Creps said.

“On No. 7, he was on the green in three and I’m about 85 yards away. I picked the right wedge and it hit the green and went into the hole,” he said.

The length of the match even caught the attention of Trueblood and Whittaker, who were the last regularly scheduled twosome of the day.

“We saw them behind us and thought maybe they weren’t able to play a match tomorrow and were playing it today,” Trueblood said.

Winners in the First Flight were: Pat Pasion, Jeff Harris, Thomas Sims and B.J. McPheron. In the Second Flight, Steve Shutt, Jason Carpenter, John Huffman and Tim Grigsby advanced to the semifinals.

The Third Flight winners were: Steve Mefferd, Jeff Davis, Alan Patrick and Brian Hennon.

Jim Odenweller, Pete Hubbell, Dennis Medeiros and Paul Masters were winners in the Senior Championship Flight.

Dan Garlock, George Hakin, Ron Bell and Creps won in the Super Seniors Flight.

In the Senior Open Flight, Jeff Kaufman, Carl Neely, Mike Ulm and Denny Thompson moved on to the semifinals.
