BEAVERDAM When golfers from all over Allen County get together for the Lima Mens City Golf Tournament it often seems like a reunion.

Players who normally play at different courses meet once a year to compete in the annual event.

The Senior Open Flight started match play Wednesday at Hidden Creek Golf Club and, because of a quirk in entry numbers, there were more byes than matches played.

Terry Pohlman bested Dave Windau by a 2-and-1 score and earned the right to take on number one seed Jerry Kaufman today at Lost Creek Golfers Club.

Other matches saw Jeff Cary advance with a 2-and-1 win over Mike Dotson. Keith Augustus birdied holes three, four and five to pull away for a 7-and-5 win over Mike Kennedy.

Brad Pethtel knocked off Mark Fannin 1-up, Mike Ulm won 6-and-4 over Dennis Bower, Ken Blanchard won 4-and-3 over Mike Szymanski and Ed Hanson moved on with a 6-and-4 win over Steve Higgins.

My putting was much better today than yesterday, Pethtel said. The course was in great shape and our match was back and forth until number 18.

I hit the driver well and I made a few putts, Blanchard said. I like the greens here, they are very well-maintained.

Senior match play tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. today at Lost Creek.

In Open Flight action, Steve Creps followed up his opening 71 with a 75 to grab the number one seed in the First Flight with his 146 total.

Shawn McGue grabbed the second seed with his 150 total while the third seed went to B. J. McPheron, who fired a two-day 154. Jeff Harris claimed the fourth seed with his 154 total.

I didnt hit the driver well today but hit my approach shots close, Harris said. I putted O.K. and the greens were nice. The course was in great shape and today was good preparation for the greens at Lost Creek and, hopefully, Shawnee.

First flight tee times begin at 8:10 a.m. today.

Second Flight action saw Michael Sarno grab the top seed on the strength of his rounds of 84-80 for a 164 total. The second seed went to Paul Volbert II with an identical 84-80, 164 score. Sarno took the number one seed in a scorecard playoff.

The third seed went to Randy Prince who also fired 84-80 for another 164. The fourth seed went to Kevin Manley with 81-83 for his 164 total.

Elida football coach Jason Carpenter qualified for second flight play with rounds of 84-86 and his 170 total.

My driver was O.K. but I hit two balls out of bounds on a par-5 hole and made an eight, Carpenter said. I had two bad holes but cant complain.

Second flight tee times begin at 8:50 a.m. this morning.

Mike Oard grabbed the Third Flight top seed with his two-day total of 172. The second seed went to Shane Gallmeier (172) while the third seed was taken by Chris Kelly, who improved on his opening round of 95 by 17 strokes as he fired a 78 for a two day total of 173. Tony Price took the fourth seed, who also fired a two day total of 173.
