LIMA — The Lima Area Women’s Match Play golf tournament will tee off Wednesday for a five-day run at five area golf courses.

All golfers will play a qualifying round of medal play at the Bluffton Golf Club on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the low 16 qualifiers will begin match play at The Oaks. All other golfers will play another round of medal play to determine which flight they will compete in. The number of flights depends on the number of entries.

On Friday, the tournament will move to the Shawnee Country Club for all flights. The semifinals will be Saturday at Lost Creek Golfers Club and the final round will be at Colonial Golfers Club on Sunday.

Sue Yohe won last year’s championship flight over Kristen Windau. The match went to 19 holes before Yohe dropped a 12-foot birdie putt for the win to clinch her second city title. She also won the 2003 tournament.

Last year’s other champions were: Vickie House, who beat Joan Whittaker in the first flight finals; Connie Shutt, who defeated Kathie Naab in the second flight finals; Kathy Paige, who won the third flight title match over Ann Armstrong; and Linda Staley, who beat Sharon Moening in the fourth flight finals.

Phyllis Hill holds the all-time record of 11 women’s city titles over a span of 31 years from 1964 to 1994.

Nancy Leech Kidder and Trois Woods won six city champion trophies and Sandy Doan, Carol Mitchell, Teresa Adams, Betts Leonard and Judy Baker have been four-time winners. Becky Komminsk and Jacque Sharber have been three-time winners.
