After dropping the first set, John Kidd couldnt have been happy with the way his morning began.

Once he had his first city tennis title in his hands, however, he was certainly happy with the way it ended.

The former Lima Central Catholic star and current Findlay tennis player bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat the defending city champion Jeff Brown 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, Saturday to win the Lima City Singles Tennis Tournament.

Its the first city title for Kidd.

In the womens finals, Lauren Rovner defeated Kaylee Davis.

Kidds struggles were apparent early, falling victim to the aggressive forehand of the Westwood professional and former University of Northwestern Ohio standout. Brown dominated the opening set, and appeared to have a strong hold on the match.

Kidd answered, however, by taking a 3-0 lead in the second set. Brown battled back, eventually forcing a tiebreaker, but clearly didnt have the same control as he had in the early going.

I started being more aggressive in the second set, Kidd said. I was a little passive in the first set, and he kind of took things toward me. I started to volley a lot better in the second set, and got some free points off the net that helped me. Once he came back, I started to get frustrated. But, I knew that I had to put that frustration aside if I wanted to win the tiebreaker.

Kidd again got the early lead in the third set, and held a slim advantage the rest of the way before finally finishing off Brown 6-4.

My shots werent there, everything felt off all day, Brown said. Not that Im making excuses. Hats off to John (Kidd), he played an outstanding game. But Ive got high standards I set for myself, and I didnt meet those the last couple days. Ill get back there, Im just not there mentally or physically right now.

Rovner cruised in the womens final, defeating Davis 6-1, 6-0. It is Rovners fourth consecutive city title.

(Davis) didnt miss much, Rovner said. She was consistent, I just put more balls away than her. I was ready to hit whatever she threw at me. Im surrounded by good players like her all the time, so that really helps me get better. And I hope that me hitting against them helps them out too.

For the 15-year old Davis, getting to play against a college tennis player was an exciting opportunity.

(Rovner) is a great player, and she had a great match today, Davis said. She coaches me, and has taught me a lot. I learned a lot from her today too.

Alex Swick took home third place in the mens bracket, defeating Sam Rutter 6-4, 6-2.

Mary Lou Roush won third place in the womens bracket, defeating Jeanna Haggard 6-4, 6-2.
