LIMA – Perry was in the Christmas spirit as they gave Lima Central Catholic many gifts when Lima Central Catholic defeated the Commodores 56-23 in non-conference girls basketball action.
Perry committed 32 turnovers, 19 in the first half. LCC led 17-4 after one quarter and 36-8 at halftime.
“We wanted to pressure, force the issue and force them into mistakes,” said LCC coach Bill Taflinger. “Obviously Stacia (Allen) shot the ball well and Madison (George) has been our unsung hero.”
Allen scored a career-high 21 points, 15 in the first half, for Lima Central Catholic (5-2). The 5-foot, 6-inch sophomore guard made five 3-pointers and was active on both ends of the floor.
“We were all ready to come out and play,” Allen said. “We had a lot of intensity. In practice Coach stresses defense and quick hands. If we are not on offensively, we bust our butts on defense.”
Perry (1-5) was without its senior starting point guard, Megan Patton, who missed the game because of school-related discipline.
Teysha Upshaw led Perry with eight points. Lexis Davis added six.
“The turnovers really hurt us,” Perry coach Herb Lane said. “The girls did what we asked. They beat us from 17-19 feet.”
Ariel McDuffie and George each scored eight points as nine different T-Birds scored.
“We do a lot of shooting at practice and right now it’s paying off,” Taflinger said. “It gets you into your press and you can do things.”
LCC led 54-16 at the end of the third quarter and was able to empty its bench midway through the third quarter.
“It’s really nice,” Taflinger said. “They come to practice and work hard. To get them in for 10 or 12 minutes is really nice.
LCC will host Wayne Trace on Jan. 3 while Perry hosts Hardin Northern on Monday.
