LIMA — Wapakoneta moved up one step, winning the eight-team Lima City Girls Tennis Invitational on Saturday at the Collett Street courts a year after it finished runner-up in the tournament.

Van Wert was runner-up in the team standings, followed by St. Marys, Ottawa-Glandorf, Bluffton, Celina, Lima Central Catholic and Lima Senior.

Wapakoneta got wins from its A singles player and C singles players and a runner-up finish in A doubles to lead the way.

Wapakoneta’s No. 1 singles player Makenzie Klock, a junior, was a repeat winner in the tournament.

She defeated St. Marys’ Mariah Krugh 6-1, 6-3 to win the A Singles on Saturday. Last year, she teamed with Ricki Oen to win the A doubles title.

Klock said patience and her ground strokes were two of the key factors in her win on Saturday.

Though the Lima Invitational was the first tournament of the year, she said it really didn’t seem different than a dual match.

“No, not really. I’ve played in quite a few tournaments, so I’m used to the environment,” she said.

Klock reached the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kari Leatherman of Ottawa-Glandorf. Krugh also won her semifinal in two sets, beating Miranda Werling of Celina 6-2, 6-3.

Van Wert’s Brooke Keber won the B singles title with on a 12-10 tie-breaker over Ottawa-Glandorf’s Stacy Kahle after they split the first two sets.

In the B singles semifinals, Keber defeated Jess Hunter of Bluffton 6-1, 6-1 and Kahle won 6-0, 6-3 over Olivia Nelson of Wapakoneta 6-0, 6-3.

Wapakoneta’s Ashley Beach beat Ottawa-Glandorf’s Ashley Heckman 6-4, 7-6 in the C singles championship match.

In the C singles semifinals, Heckman was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Jenna Waterman of Van Wert 6-0, 6-4, and Beach defeated Lauren McNamara of Lima Central Catholic 6-2, 6-0.

Bluffton’s team of Ashlin Gable and Emily Sprague won the A Doubles by defeating Kara Wellons and Shelby Gillespie of Wapakoneta 6-1, 6-1.

The Bluffton team got to the finals with a 6-1, 6-3 semifinals win over Kristen Lantz and Renee Chen of Van Wert. The Wapakoneta team won its semifinal over Haylee Kill and Ashley Zimmerman of St. Marys 6-2, 6-2.

Lindsay Smith and Katie Etter of Van Wert won 6-3, 6-2 over Ariel Dodson and Katie Peterson of St. Marys in the B doubles final.

In the B Doubles semifinals, Smith and Etter won 6-2, 6-1 over Celina’s Leah Rose and Brooke Sutter, and Dodson and Peterson took a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Bluffton’s Liz Diller and Kristi Geiser.
