VAN WERT – Kalida was able to expand the Fort Jennings’ zone.

Then, the Wildcats looked to go inside.

Kalida went inside in the second half and pulled away with a 55-43 victory over Fort Jennings in the opening round of the Division IV boys basketball sectional tournament Tuesday at Van Wert High School.

Kalida (11-12) advances to the sectional finals and will face the No.1-seed Miller City (12-9) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Van Wert. Kalida defeated Miller City in the regular season.

Fort Jennings ends its season 8-15.

Collin Nartker went inside in the second half for Kalida and led the team with 15 points. He had 12 in the second half and seven in the third quarter.

“We got that little lead and it caused them to spread (the zone) out a little bit,” Kalida coach Ryan Stechschulte said. “I thought we did a good job against their zone with patience. Then, we got him (Nartker) isolated in the middle a few times and we also got him on the block and he did exactly what we wanted him to do and that was attack.”

Grant Laudick added 11 point and seven rebounds for Kalida.

Trent Siebeneck had eight points, including hitting 6 of 8 at the foul line in the fourth quarter. Noah Lambert had seven points for Kalida.

Brandon Wehri led Fort Jennings with 11 points and eight rebounds. Cole Horstman had 10 points. Luke Trentman had nine points.

Laudick held the Musketeers’ Ian Finn scoreless.

“Ian Finn played well against us in the first game (19 points in a 46-42 win by Kalida on Jan. 13) and the sophomore Grant Laudick did a good job against him tonight,” Stechschulte said.

Kalida took the lead to stay 6-5 on a layup by Jeff Knueve with 1:15 left in the first quarter.

Kalida led 8-7 after the first quarter.

The Wildcats started the second quarter on an 11-4 run to pull out to a 19-11 lead. During that run, Lambert hit a 3-pointer and two foul shots.

Kalida led 22-17 at the half.

In the third, Kalida looked inside to Nartker and Knueve (six points, three points).

“We kind of settled down after some early tournament jitters,” Siebeneck said. “Once we settled down, we got it to our big guy and let him go to work.”

Kalida was in control after three, 38-27.

Kalida shot 46 percent from the floor and was 2 of 9 on 3-pointers. Fort Jennings shot 34 percent and was 2 of 11 on 3-pointers.

Fort Jennings won the boards, 28-25.

Kalida faces Miller City again, after posting a 61-41 win over Miller City on Feb. 10 at Kalida.

“I want to cut down lots of nets,” Siebeneck said.

Lincolnview 66,

Antwerp 47

VAN WERT – Lincolnview’s defense clamped down on Antwerp in the second quarter and the Lancers posted a 66-47 victory over Antwerp in the second sectional game of the night at Van Wert.

Lincolnview went on a 16-0 run in the second quarter, which took a 19-15 lead and ballooned it to 35-15 with 1:07 left in the second quarter.

The Lancers led 35-17 at the half and 51-28 after three quarters.

Lincolnview (11-12) will face No.2-seed Crestview (15-6) in the sectional finals at 5 p.m. Saturday at Van Wert.

Antwerp ends its year 8-15.

Caden Ringwald led Lincolnview with 15 points.

Chayten Overholt scored 14 for the Lancers, including hitting two 3-pointers in that key 16-0 run.

Ryan Rager had 12 points for Lincolnview, while Ethan Kemler had 10 points and six rebounds.

Antwerp was led by Matt Jones, who scored 18 points with four 3-pointers. But he scored 15 with all four 3-pointers in the final quarter, but it was way too late for the Archers to make a serious run.

Overholt and Rager spent most of the game holding Jones in check.

“I thought in the second and third quarters we did a fantastic job (on defense),” Crestview coach Brett Hammons said. “We shut them down and did a good job of forcing turnovers. And we finally got out and ran and got easier baskets for ourselves.”
