LIMA — The 2016 edition of the Lima City Tennis Invitational tournament was held in chilly and breezy conditions Saturday at the UNOH tennis courts.
Ottawa-Glandorf won the team title with 37 points followed by LCC (36), Van Wert (26), Bluffton (25), Bath (20) and Lima Senior (6).
The tournament was played using “no add” scoring in all preliminary and consolation matches with only the championship matches being played under the traditional scoring system.
Lima Central Catholic coach Kevin Bruin, who doubled as the tournament organizer, likes what his team can learn from playing in the event.
“It is good preparation for the (sectional and district) tournament; it’s an all-day event and the kids have to learn to manage their time in order to stay sharp the whole day.” Bruin said. “Our kids played well, and you get to see other teams that allows for better informed seeding come tournament time.”
The first singles title was claimed by Brandon Amstutz of Van Wert who bested Spencer Collins of LCC by a 6-4, 6-4 score.
“My first match of the day was tough but it helped me to get in a rhythm and I played well today,” Amstutz said. “My serve led me today but I also hit some nice cross-court shots.”
Ben Brinkman of LCC claimed the second singles crown with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Evan Barret of Ottawa-Glandorf.
“I played pretty good and serving was a big part of my game,” Brinkman said. “Today gives you a good thought process of what to expect come tournament time.”
Third singles saw Trevor Bunch from Bluffton grab the title when he bested Logan Korzan from LCC by a score of 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-4.
First doubles winners were Gabe Rollins and Davis Munroe from Van Wert who knocked off Bath’s Ian Younts and Caden Schmidt 6-1, 6-2.
Ottawa-Glandorf took the second doubles title when Zach Balbaugh and Nick Weirauch beat Collin Walker and Colin Poling by a 6-3, 6-4 score.
Consolation flight winners were Jordan Verhoff in the first singles with a 8-6 win over Justin Haggard. Ryan Sprague of Bluffton took the second singles with an 8-1 win over Spencer Stubbs. The third singles saw Jeff Kaufman of O-G grab a 8-0 win over Jarod Dietsch from Bath.
First doubles saw Kyle Smith and Sam Meredith of LCC knock off Kevin Recker and Carig Recker from O-G by a score 8-6 while the second doubles team of Aaron Schmid and Jared Jackson from LCC beat Dalton Heppard and Brady Place from Van Wert.
