Food pantry benefit to start today

Salvation Army falls short in Christmas in July campaign

LIMA — The Salvation Army has concluded its Christmas in July kettle campaign, raising $12,413.39. This total is 62 percent of its target of $20,000. The Salvation Army said a lack of volunteer bell ringers contributed to the shortfall.All funds will be used to assist Allen County residents. Theodore Van Kirk died a hero. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.In the predawn hours of Aug. 6, 1945, he was the navigator for Col. Paul Tibbets Jr. aboard the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, effectively ending World War II.Twelve men were part of the crew that day, with Van Kirk being the last surviving member. He died Monday, at the age of 93.
