Adam Tiffen Column: ‘Boots on the Ground’ a misnomer’

Now | | | Email

Last week, the question on everyone’s minds during the President’s ISIS address was whether or not the President would authorize “boots on the ground.” For all the experts and pundits on cable news, however, no one bothered to mention a basic fact in their subsequent analysis: Despite the popularity of the phrase, “boots on the ground” is a meaningless metric by which to evaluate the U.S. response to any threat.

Letter: Performing the work of angels

I would like to thank the UAW/Ford wheelchair ramp crew. I am a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair since 1972. This summer I contacted them asking to have my old wheelchair ramp replaced. They reviewed my old ramp and could see it needed replaced. They took care of getting the material, brought in a group of men and had me a new ramp in a morning’s work. This is a great program and I would like to let everyone know that it means a lot to people in my condition that there is a...

Leonard Pitts column: What is and is not child abuse

My mother was a child abuser. I was, too. In fact, growing up, pretty much every parent I knew abused their kids.Or so many of Adrian Peterson’s critics would have you believe. Peterson, a star of the Minnesota Vikings, was arrested recently for child abuse after hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch. A “switch,” for those who don’t know, is a long twig. I should know, having been on the receiving end of quite a few. When no switch was available, mom was ...

Christine Flowers column: Miss America has conflicting background

Growing up, the odds that I would have been picked to wear a sash as Miss Anything were slimmer than Rosie O’Donnell winning Miss (or Mr.) Congeniality. Overweight, myopic and blessed with hair that in its natural state looked like one of those designs you used to draw on a Spirograph, I was hardly Bert Parks material. Thus, you would be justified in believing that anything negative I have to say about the reigning Miss America will likely come off as sour grapes, fermented and poured i...

Letter: Recognize the signs of suicide

Statistics have shown that suicide has drastically increased in Allen, Auglaize and Hardin counties in the past five years. They include:• Talking about feeling hopeless.• Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain....

Letter: Suggestion for improving library

This year we have seen the completion of several positive and helpful improvements at the Lima Public Library. However, in at least one area, the library has taken a step backward. For some unknown reason, the logic of which escapes me, the library has done away with dividing its DVD collection by category or genre and just lumped them all together in alphabetical order. This has made it hard to find a movie when I have just had a genre in mind and not been looking for a specific ti...

Could Cavaliers challenge OSU with Ohio fans?

After a long time alone at the top, Ohio State has a new rival. No, not Michigan State, even though Sparty outplayed the Buckeyes in the Big Ten championship game in December. And it’s certainly not one of the Big Ten’s two new teams, Rutgers and Maryland. We’re talking about a different type of rival here.Ever since OSU won the 2002 national championship in double overtime against Miami, it has been the undisputed king of all sports in Ohio. I...

In a world of electronic media, physical libraries still essential

LIMA — Not so many years ago, the notion of the public library would invite images of people flipping through their favorite author’s new novel as they were surrounded by shelves filled with thousands of books. Patrons would flip their fingers through index cards, mastering the Dewey Decimal System while looking for their next read. However, as technology has advanced, alternatives to books have become more popular.
