Thomas Lucente: Hostility toward police officers easy to understand

Now | | | Email

One could make a career out of writing a column about the unbelievable actions of police officers and prosecutors in our burgeoning police state.I have no desire to engage in such an activity because on some level I respect the kind of person it takes to do that job correctly.Sometimes, though, the depravity is too large to ignore.Take the case involving Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Wood and former Napster Chief Operating Officer Milton Olin Jr.The 65-year-old Olin, a married father of two and a prominent entertainment attorney, was riding his bicycle in a bike lane Dec. 8 when, shortly after 1 p.m. Wood’s patrol car slammed into him killing him. Wood did not brake or swerve before hitting Olin.

Will column: Paul Ryan’s way forward

WASHINGTON — To take the measure of this uncommonly interesting public man, begin with two related facts about him. Paul Ryan has at least 67 cousins in his Wisconsin hometown of Janesville, where there are six Ryan households within eight blocks of his home. And in his new book, “The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea,” he says something few politicians say, which is why so many are neither trusted nor respected.Ryan says he was wrong.

Labor Day: Skills for a lifetime

By Thomas E. PerezAs the Secretary of Labor, I have a unique opportunity to meet with employers around the country of all sizes and from an array of industries. So many of them tell me the same thing: they’re ready to grow their businesses and to hire more people. But here’s the rub: too often, they can’t find workers who have the skills they need.Meanwhile, although businesses have added 9.9 million jobs since February 2010, a lot of people a...

Navy’s lead fleeting

Command performance for Barrett

BALTIMORE — Three weeks ago, if J.T. Barrett gave any thought to what he’d be doing after Ohio State’s season opener against Navy, he probably figured it would go something like this:First, make a quick change out of a uniform that was so lightly used he could probably wear it again the next week without throwing it into the laundry. Then grab one of the pizzas in boxes on a table outside the locker room for his post-game meal, head for the bus to the airport and ...
