15 hours ago | | | Email

LIMA — An issue with the most popular carrier in the region kept many parents and students from finding out via text that the morning’s fog cancelled school today.Ohio Alerts was unable to deliver a number of messages this morning because of a “carrier issue” with Verizon, said Ray Burden, executive director of the Northwest Ohio Area Computer Services Cooperative. The free service is used by the bulk of area public school districts.Burden said the Ohio Alerts system worked as expected, but Verizon didn’t deliver the text messages. He hoped the issue could be resolved today but noted he “can’t make any promises.”

Letter: ‘Breaking Bad’ toys inappropriate

I am outraged that the “Breaking Bad” action figures are being sold at all the major retail stores in their toy departments. Most disturbing is that Toys R Us is selling this. They are complete with a meth lab, beakers, hazmat suits and blue crystal meth. They are being defended by those at Toys R Us as an adult figure. Age limit 15 and up. Really? Why would anyone promote drug use directly or indirectly as a toy?Reminds me of the Joe Camel ads for c...

Letter: Judicial race supposed to be nonpartisan

In the race for Juvenile and Probate judge in Allen County, I have noticed that in what is supposed to be a nonpartisan contest that Judge Glenn Derryberry’s opponent has chosen to prominently display her party affiliation on campaign signs. What might the motivations be for such a move? Is it a plea for Republican votes in Allen County for a candidate with very minimal qualifications? It was said in one interview the challenger is just the last person standing who w...

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Paycheck Fairness Act: It’s not needed

OCT. 20, 2014 — Democrats’ campaign-trail calls for yet more “pay equity” legislation are cynical political ploys that omit the fact that paying women less than men for the same work already is illegal.Chicago labor and employment lawyer Gerald Skoning writes in The Wall Street Journal that the proposed Paycheck Fairness Act, touted as providing “more effective remedies,” actually would provide class-action lawyers more opportunities to sue for m...

Only about a third of eligible voters in Florida will cast their ballots on Election Day, he says. People in 35 states can vote early without having to give an excuse for missing Election Day and...

Letter: Derryberry being hypocritical

I keep hearing that the Probate/Juvenile judge position is nonpartisan. Non-partisan means to be free from party affiliation or bias in the administration of justice.Team Derryberry seems to imply that Carlene Huston-Kinworthy cannot refer to herself as the Republican candidate. If that was the case, why did the Supreme Court change the rules this year to permit candidates to inform the public as to their party affiliation?

Letter: Jim Jordan out of touch

Jim Jordan said at a chamber meeting at Husky that the public is fed up with Washington and people don’t want to work.I know he’s probably busy with Congress meeting for 90 days this year, otherwise he could read a newspaper and see when Wal-Mart opens a store with 200 jobs they get 2,000 applications. And yes, we are fed up with a Republican House that insists on tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires while they vote to make Medicare a voucher, which is a...
