Speaker: Common Core is beneficial

BLUFFTON — One of the goals of Common Core is to make sure students are really understanding what they learn.Linda Gojak said at Bluffton University on Tuesday that this means a student should understand and be able to explain themselves, rather than simply memorizing a formula. Students should also be able to think about how topics are related. Common Core has fewer standards with the goal of deeper understanding.Gojak is the director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education, Teaching and Technology at John Carroll University and the immediate past president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
