Letter: Scaring people with the facts
Saturday's Commentary page included a column by Deroy Murdock that gives the impression that full-scale voter fraud is likely because “24 million active voter registrations are no longer valid or are inaccurate.” The heading for the column says “Many states still have dead people registered to vote.”
Gosh, that would be a shocker except for one little-known fact. In Ohio and in New York, the only two states I can speak of, there is no requirement to let the board of elections know that a citizen has died. I believe the way the voting rolls are purged is that, after a certain number of elections with no vote, that name goes off the rolls. Even if the name remains, that person can't vote unless he actually submits a ballot with a valid signature.
There is no actual fraud or attempt at fraud here. There is a hole in the system that needs to be addressed. If the system in place is deemed adequate, let's stop using scare headlines about dead people on the voter rolls.
