Letter: Consider those who can't pay more taxes
Thank you, James Bassett (letter, Feb. 15, “Bath district doesn't need new school”). Not everyone in Bath Township wants a new school. Not everyone in Bath Township can afford $345-plus a year in new taxes.
A lot of these residents who are for the levy live on a one-acre lot, draw big pensions from places like Dana Corp., Ford Motor Co., Procter & Gamble, etc. Some of us live on Social Security and cannot afford new taxes. A lot of us live under the poverty level so we have to count our pennies daily.
Enrollment has been down every year for the past three years, so why can't we just repair a school instead of building a new one? Why can't you add on to the middle school? Tear up the tennis courts, etc., and build on to the west. That way you wouldn't need a big new gym, which seems to be a big priority.
I have lived in Bath Township for 60 years and paid taxes, sent kids and grandkids to school, but enough is enough. If it's a choice among medicines, food and taxes, I will take the meds and food.
Please take a good look at those of us who cannot afford to live now without pinching pennies and reconsider your vote. Those of us who cannot afford the taxes will thank you.
