Terminology important to win arguments

Just as proponents for abortion circumvented discussion about killing of babies by focusing on freedom of choice, so the homosexual lobby skillfully branded their cause a “gay rights” issue.

This clever use of terminology changed the discussions. The pro-abortionists spoke of women’s rights and terminating a fetus, even denying the humanity in a woman’s womb while homosexuals talk of an “alternate lifestyle” and “gay rights.” The redefining of terms greatly aided both campaigns in making their arguments more palatable, even deserving of sympathy. In both cases, the arguments moved from the moral issues to “civil rights.”

Unfortunately, moral conservatives have greatly aided the efforts of the abortionists and homosexuals by adopting their terminologies and arguing their topics. We have thereby aided their effort to mold public opinion. In order for this to change, we must make the case that killing unborn babies is always wrong and repudiate claims of homosexual rights, not referring to homosexuals, as “gay.” Abortion is always murder and homosexuality is not “gay,” it is an unnatural way to live and hurtful to our nation. Both are selfish, unloving choices.

As Americans, we need to understand that moral wrongs are never civil rights and moral decay is destructive to any nation. Righteousness lifts up a nation, but wickedness hurts any society. We must not let clever use of terminology distract our focus from the real issues of morality.

— Claude R. Paxton, Elida
