Officials say drivers should maintain 10 feet distance from the vehicle in front of them for every 10 mph. How does one determine the distance? Forty feet, 60 feet or whatever?

A better war: Keep two seconds between you and the car ahead.

To implement: Watch the car ahead. Pick out a landmark: a road sign, telephone pole, shadow across the road, etc. The car ahead clears and you count: one thousand one, one thousand two before you clear the same space. If you count less, then you slow down until the two second interval is attained.

Obviously the two seconds gives greater space as your speed increases. This really works. I have been using the method for years in all types of traffic.
