Jim Jordan needs

to take math test

In the March 27 edition of The Lima News, U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan stated he was concerned about the size of the national debt and “that the interest to service the debt is larger that what the government spends on national defense”.

He also said that several of the President’s Cabinet Secretaries misled us as to the impact of the recent sequestration budget cuts. I imagine that the budget cuts have just started being felt. However his statement about interest on the debt and the Defense Department’s budget are easily checked. And according to the Congressional Budget Office, interest paid on the debt during Fiscal year 2012 was $220 billion.

The Defense Department’s web site states that it’s budget for the same year was $645.7 billion.

Maybe Mr. Jordan was just trying to keep his political base fired up. Or he didn’t pass high school general math. Obviously he didn’t watch Sesame Street when they showed the difference between “big” and “little”.
