The Republican Party’s attack on women’s health is for real. The Texas legislature has cut all funding for Planned Parenthood and other states controlled by the Republican

Party are now considering the same. During the Bush administration, funding for Planned Parenthood in developing countries was also cut, but these cuts were reinstated under President Obama Planned Parenthood provides free health screening for poor women all over the world. This includes free mammograms and other cancer screenings, and well as STD and HIV testing and treatment and contraception. Less than 3 percent of their activity involves abortion counseling. Yet because of this, the Republican Party is willing to sacrifice the care and concern for women’s health.

Research over the past 50 years makes it abundantly clear that access to contraception significantly reduces the number of unwanted and unplanned pregnancies and, therefore, significantly reduces the desire for abortions. But we have seen this past year that the extremists in the Republican Party are opposed to contraception as well as abortion, and they base this on “Church doctrine.” I cannot think that “Church doctrine” would ever trump the biblically based concern for the poor and the sick.

Mr. Romney may be a very nice man, but he represents the most extreme and draconian Republican Party platform that shows no concern for women’s health or women’s rights. They want to run their campaign on economic issues, but all the Republicans have put forward in Congress so far represent their extreme social agenda. If you are concerned, as I am, about women’s health and women’s rights, vote Democratic in November.
