Ohioans need many health care options

As the Medicaid expansion debate heats up in Columbus, legislators need to consider unconventional and out of the box ways to help reduce health-care costs and give Ohioans as many health care options as possible.

I recently read about a program called Structured Family Caregiving, which is part of the PASSPORT program. This alternative to nursing homes would allow seniors the chance to remain in their home and receive care from a family member, who would ultimately receive a stipend for performing that care. This program is available to nearly seventy percent of Ohioans, but not in our community.

Structured Family Caregiving would help reduce healthcare costs and provide Ohio’s seniors with an array of choices. Ohio’s legislative leaders should extend access of this program to all Ohioans because it will reduce costs, and allow all Ohioans to have the same choices in health care programs.
