The silencing of
people of faith
According to The Lima News, it is stated that “the Editorial Column reflects the view of The Lima News editorial board.” On Thursday, Nov. 8, the board affirmed an editorial entitled, “Keeping Politics out of the Pulpit.” Essentially, this editorial board challenged the right of people of faith to articulate their views on biblical issues of conviction whether it is done within or outside the church setting. It is my belief that people of faith should express their defense for issues of concern and should not be intimidated by the culture or The Lima News for that matter.
The editorial challenged the right of Billy and Franklin Graham, as well as Catholic bishops, to express their support for pro-life and pro-traditional marriage concerns. On Sunday, Nov. 4, Billy Graham placed a full page advertisement in The Lima News and many other papers in support of the “sanctity of life” and his support for “traditional marriage.” The Lima News ran the advertisement demonstrating a double standard. By doing so they are communicated to those like Billy Graham that we want your money, but we don’t believe that you have the right to communicate your convictions.
Not long ago this very same “silencing of people of faith” took place in Europe. In the process there was the extermination of six million Jews and is a well known historical nightmare called “the Holocaust.” In our present day we live in an American culture that gives lip service to the idea of being tolerant and an interest to having dialogue on issues, and then conversely desires the silencing of people of faith and conviction.
